I began my martial arts journey at 7 years old, training at Doncaster Judo Club, regularly competing in the junior squad. At age 20 I started Olympic wrestling, as adult judo in Doncaster didn’t fulfil my martial arts passion. I was introduced to Brazilian Jui Jitsu (BJJ) by Tony Lockwood co-owner at that time of New Bodies Gym, where a group of guys were learning BJJ disciplines from books and VHS. Tony knew my background in martial arts and this is where my BJJ journey began. I entered the first European championship held at Battersea London in 2001, before International Brazilian Jui Jitsu Federation (IBJF) was formed. Winning under 76kg and absolute open weight.
In 2007, the Doncaster Judo club came up for sale, with possibilities of it been demolished and used for development project, I wanted to rescue the Judo Club from which my martial arts journey began. I asked my wife if I could buy it, as it was a big part of my life…. eventually she agreed. I’ve since concentrated on running the school with my close friend Neil Owen and turned it into Doncaster’s and one of the UK’s most revered Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and martial arts centres.
I started competing again in 2019 as my son challenged me to do the IBJF European in Lisbon as he had never seen me compete. I was lucky enough to win in 2019 and 2020, making me the 3 x European BJJ Gold medalist.
Starting my martial arts journey at the age of 6 in Judo and then going on to do 10 different martial arts. Being the Son of a Royal Artillery soldier, martial arts was a big part of my life, my hero was Bruce Lee, acting out all the moves from Enter the Dragon. As a young adult, my journey was put on hold due to work and life getting in the way, having spent around 5 years away my life was taking a very different turn, one which saw me involved in football crowds and ‘gangs’. After a few charges against me and me realising that my life was not where I wanted it to be I decided that I had to make changes and the only way I knew how was to walk into a martial arts dojo again. I needed respect and discipline back in my life.
My life changed, I got promoted at work reaching senior Management status within a local authority and then leaving to set up my own business(es).
